Emerald Physicians presents VivaPalooza!

A jubilee of eating local, celebrating imagination, and living healthy

Emerald Physicians will be hosting its 3rd annual healthy living expo called VivaPalooza on Saturday, September 8th from 8-4 at Barnstable High School.   This free event focuses on community health education, patient empowerment, and advocacy for all patients, and will showcase a spectrum of choices and information for a healthy lifestyle.

Local exhibitors will be present to promote healthy living through food and nutrition, cooking demonstrations, massage, chiropractics, acupuncture, skin care, eco-products, artwork, literature, recycling/energy education, and more.

Flu shots will be available, as will complimentary medical screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin health.

A line-up of speakers will be presented in Knight Auditorium, featuring the keynote address by Sean O’Reilly, founder and CEO of 3D Printsmith, LLC, who will speak about 3D printing and its medical applications.  Physicians and other healthcare providers will address healthy lifestyle related topics including brain health, diabetes, preventive medicine, trends in pediatrics, and skin cancer.

The day will kick off with yoga and tai’chi sessions from 8-9 am prior to the speaker workshops.  Fitness information and demonstrations will run all day in the BHS Astro Park, including a Zumba®/dance fitness fundraiser class from 2-3pm.  A lively kids’ section will include soccer, dance, and movement activities, crafts, face painting, story hour, nature and oceanic fun, and more.   Local entertainment will be on hand, as will an outdoor farmers’ market offering seasonal harvests.  Additionally, a blood drive for Children’s Hospital’s Pints for Half Pints will be held from 9-3.

VivaPalooza will also be an official registration spot for the  Mighty Meehan 5k, which benefits pediatric cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

A healthy fare sampling will be provided by local favorites including Ardeo’s, The Barnstable Market,  Beech Tree Cantina, Beech Tree Coffeehouse,  The Black Cat Tavern, British Beer Company, The Common Ground, DiParma,  The Daily Paper, Four Seas Ice Cream, IDGY’s, The Island Merchant, The Optimist Café, The Paddock, Pain d’Avignon, Pizza Barbone, Pizzeria Regina, Rendezvous Café, The Raw Bar, The Roadhouse Café, Sam Diego’s, Sea Street Café, Spanky’s, The Underground Bakery, and The Yarmouth House.  Fundraising proceeds from raffles and donations at this event will benefit an Emerald Physicians scholarship fund.

Please see www.emeraldphysicians.com for schedules for speakers and events throughout the day.

A special VivaPalooza Star Party will be held on Friday, September 7th, from 730-930pm in the BHS Astro Park and will feature local performers, an ice-cream social, and astronomy sky viewing led by Mike Gyra.   Everyone is welcome!

More About Barnstable High School

Barnstable High School

Barnstable High School

744 W Main St, Hyannis, MA
508-790-6445

In 1879, Barnstable High School moved back to Hyannis for good. Additional wings were added in 1963 and 1976, and in 1998 the addition of a professional class performing arts venue and new wing were added. Since then, the school continues to improve its grounds and has added a phenomenal Astro Park and astronomy observatory in what was once called the Quad.

Beyond physical improvements to its grounds, it boasts a top-notch TV production studio used to film Barnstable Today and local public broadcasting, notable arts offerings and a full range of academic and athletic programs.

In the fall of 2010, the track and football field were renovated.

The school serves grades eight through 12. However, there are several programs and services available to town residents and students after school hours and during the summer including movie nights in the astro park.
