Letter to the Editor: "Major Problem" with County Clerk

What is your experience with the county clerk?

There seems to be "a major problem" regarding the position of Barnstable County Clerk. Today I contacted Scott Nickerson (Barnstable Superior Court Clerk) to ask a question, and he responded to me very forcefully that he is no longer the County Clerk, and has not been since December of last year! He advised me to contact the state Elections Division for any inquiries. In any case, I contacted Mark Zielinski's office, and his administrative assistant informed me that the position of County Clerk is appointed by the County Commissioners, and that Mr. Nickerson was not reappointed last year (because of some "major snafu" I gather). I asked her who the current County Clerk is, and she informed me that "we do NOT have one at the present time..." I am a bit disturbed that an election year is coming up soon and there is still no County Clerk to
handle the various important responsibilities that need to be dealt with... Could you please bring this matter up at the next Assembly of Delegates meeting to see what if anything can be done to resolve the problem?

Thank you,
Ron Beaty

...the basic "problem" is that there is no County Clerk, and has not been for about a year because the necessary action has not been taken by the County Commissioners. The impact has not been felt as of yet because no County-level elections have been held during this time period, however, next year is an entirely different story...it is a big election year and no one presently exists to handle the necessary responsibilities for processing nomination papers and other related issues at the County stage of things...this problem was originally caused by a major snafu that transpired during the 2010 elections in which five candidates from various parts of the Cape were left off of their respective ballots even though they did everything required of them...In the end, it is the residents and voters of Cape Cod who are cheated if this problem is not rectified sometime in the near future... ^_^

...UPDATE: this matter has been brought to the attention of the full County Assembly of Delegates through Tom Lynch...and some members of the Assembly have already questioned the County Commissioners about why this is occurring. In addition, Oliver Cipollini and myself have an appointment scheduled to meet with Tom Lynch at the Town Hall next Tuesday, the 13th at 10 AM to discuss the matter and ask that the situation be continually monitored to make sure the County Clerk appointment is made in a timely fashion... ^_^
