Friday Night Lights: BHS Stages Second OCL Win

Four Barnstable High boys basketball players finished with double-digit scoring and Charlie Rice and Nick Peabody notched double-doubles as the Red Raiders overcame the visiting B-R Trojans, 63-53, last night in Hyannis.

If "one" is the loneliest number, then "10" must be the most comforting.

At least for the Barnstable High School Red Raider boys basketball team.

In its second Old Colony League victory of the season, Barnstable outlasted the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans last night in Hyannis, 63-53, thanks to double-digit scoring from senior captain Charlie Rice, junior forward Nick Peabody, and senior guards Everett Walsh and Travis Kendrew.

Rice poured in 16 second-half points and had 19 on the night while pulling down 10 rebounds to give him his third double-double of the season, while fellow big man beneath the glass Nick Peabody collected 13 points and also had 10 rebounds on the night.

Walsh scored six of his 10 points in the second half while Kendrew was a frequent visitor to the charity stripe, going 6-8, and wrapping up the finale with a 10-point output.

The victory puts the Red Raiders at 8-2 on the season while the loss for B-R drops the Trojans to 4-5. BHS is 2-0 in th OCL with non-league opponent Dennis-Yarmouth on the schedule for next Tuesday night (Jan. 24).

B-R's top scorer on the evening was Zac Lyons who had 14 points, but the Trojans' usual top offensive producer, Pete Doherty, who's been averaging over 15 points per game this season, was shut down by the Red Raiders' defense. Doherty had just two points on the night, thanks to a relentless defensive effort by the hosts.

For the second time this week, though, Barnstable made the victory appear slightly more difficult than it may have needed to as the Red & White missed 18 shots in the first half alone. At halftime, BHS held what appeared to be a precarious 25-23 lead.

The guests rode the hot hands of Kashaun Ellis and Lyons to a six-point lead but the lead was shortlived as Rice and Peabody turned things up a notch beneath the boards in the second half and had some key put-backs on second-chance offensive tries.

Senior Ty Adams added three (3) points and had two assists, junior Jason Eddy added four (4) points and two assists and Dylan Morris added a needed spark off the bench for (4) four points.
