Cape Cod Times Fires Long-Time Reporter
The Cape Cod Times fired veteran reporter Karen Jeffrey for falsifying sources in at least 34 stories since 1998.
Cape Cod Times Publisher Peter Meyer issued an apology to readers Tuesday night. Meyer said the paper broke readers' trust. “An internal review has found that one of our reporters wrote dozens of stories that included one or more sources who do not exist,” Meyer said.
A recent Veterans Day story written by Karen Jeffrey on Nov. 12 sparked an audit of her work. Times editors used public record databases, voter rolls and town assessor’s records to review Jeffrey’s stories and to attempt to locate the sources.
During the audit editors uncovered proof that Jeffrey made up at least 69 people in 34 stories since 1998 when the paper began archiving stories electronically.
According to Meyer, Jeffrey admitted to using false names and fabricating sources; the paper no longer employs her.
Meyer said the paper will take steps to prevent incidents like this in the future. Editors will spot check sources more frequently by choosing stories at random and confirming sources. The paper will also hold ethics training sessions. Meyer encouraged readers to inform them of any mistakes.

"reader’s trust" What happens when the newspaper doesn't report the news at all ?
Why won't the liberal paper print a negative story about all the wind turbine failures !
The news media does not report all the news. You have to ask why the news has not picked up on the commercial wind turbine gear box failures in many many three year old 1.5 Megawatt turbines. One right here on Cape Cod ! These turbines were sold to last twenty years. They need up to a million dollars in repairs every 3 to 5 years
In 2009 the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) installed a commercial wind turbine on December 15, 2009. The turbine is a Furhlander 1.5 MW.
The Massachusetts Military Reservation (Otis Air Force Base) claims there is no problem with there wind turbine and they are replacing the gear box, They leave out the total cost of the repairs .
The Princeton ,Massachusetts turbine gear box costs 600 thousand and the Portsmouth High School ,Rhode Island turbine is near one million

I always thought Peter Meyer spelled his name Meyer, not Meijer.
When I worked for a news oriented publication, the editor always verified resources....isn't it sad that some people "cheat" even when no $$$ is involved....
Desperate!!

Report the real news! :
Why hasn't the news media reported on the Otis Wind Turbine ? Is the news media to liberal ? What happened to investagative news ?
The FL-1577 started operating on 02 Dec 2009. The GE turbines started opeating on 03 Nov 2011. Regarding the FL-1577 gearbox, it HAS NOT failed. We noticed some metal flakes in the gearbox oil this past January and had a borescope inspection done. The inspection showed pitting of the gear teeth caused by pressing the metal flakes between the teeth. The problem component in the gearbox appears to be a bearing. Based on Fuhrlaender's recommendation, we are continuing to run the wind turbine while we work on procuring a new gearbox that has a different/better bearing. We monitor the turbine continuously via remote monitoring for a variety of parameters and we have technicians who visit the turbine each weekday during rounds conducted for our treatment systems.

I think for years the news has been giving out "puff" news stories about commercial wind turbines . The liberals feel that 'green" is politically correct ! Peter Meyer, Publisher of the Cape Cod Times has the power to spend some money and do an investagative news story about commercial wind turbines failing three years after they are installed when they were sold to last twenty years !
You've got a news reporter who faked dozens of news articles .How about a story about the truth of commercial wind turbines. It's happening right here at Otis Air Base

That depends, I noticed they didn't say what was actually made up and what point the made up facts supported.
Did what was made up support liberal views or conservative. Did all of them support one or the other or was it half and half.
Were they funny or neutral human interest stories that didn't happen?????

The problem is you've got people from the federal government telling news media outlets that there is nothing wrong with the 2009 Otis wind turbine .
They tell the news that the turbine is operating but don't tell them the turbine is at half speed because of the bad bearings . The gear box has 200 gallons of oil which can leak if the turbine heats up due to bearing failures . The spokesperson for the turbine said that since last January they have no idea of the cost of the repairs . Do you believe that or do you think it's near a million dollars !
There was a news story in the national news about gear box failures today !

The Otis wind turbine is having a catastrophic failure right in front of every newspaper on Cape Cod and no one does a news report .

Now move on..............
This was/is about a liar representing the Times ..... even though as a kid we called it the Sub-Standard Times I had hoped it had changed........... I made a good decision dropping it on weekdays........ sorry Pete.
If you wish, Bill, I am sure the Patch folks will give you a blog if you remain polite and respectful........ and don't call Liz Warren by a "nasty" name or two, as I did.

The paper should print the truth. The point I make is that when the paper doesn't print any news story about a certain subject isn't that just as bad as printing a fake story ?
My example is the Otis wind turbine gear box failures and all the gear box failures in New England in turbines installed since 2008.
The Otis wind turbine is a real story it has to do with the economics and feasibility of taxpayer dollars that went into building it!

Bill Carson seems obsessed with the purported failure of a wind turbine gearbox. An odd fascination. Does he track the reliability of gearboxes in other types of machines, perhaps oil tanker ships? Probably not. As broader criticisms of wind energy have been steadily debunked, he's had to resort to this weird detail. And he wonders why reporters aren't interested..

Bill - Abdicating journalistic examination is more injurious to public trust than Jeffrey using false names and fabricating sources. Absent journalistic scrutiny of the "whole story" is just another example of jumping on the “green” bandwagon. Doing so is much easier than doing the rigorous analysis required to press the objective coverage of the issue. CCT leadership is not unique.

Mark , I have spoken to many news reporters from SE Mass and Cape Cod after many wind turbine meetings about noise issues. When you talk to these reporters they all know you can't have a hundred people telling a lie for two years. There is a disconnect between what these reporters know and what the newspaper editors allow in the press.
Now we see hundreds more people making noise complaints in towns like Fairhaven and Scituate. Every time a new commercial wind turbine goes up more and more complaints. I was at one meeting where they told us "you have to break a few eggs to make an omellett" . The eggs are the residents ! That never made it in the news!
It appears corporations who own controlling interest in the news just don't report negative wind stories only "puff" news about commercial wind . The politicians have wind turbine lobbyist controlling the representation of the people who elected them.

The Cape Cod Times has 1383 news stories that relate the fired long time reporter. Who really knows how many of those news stories were fabricated.
The newspaper industry has fallen on hard times. The newspapers blame it on the Internet.
I recently asked why the newspapers don't do an investigative news story on the gear box failures on large commercial wind turbines only three years old. In particular the one right here at Otis AFB. Why hasn't the newspapers gone out and interviewed the residents in Falmouth ,Fairhaven and Scituate who are becoming ill from the wind turbine noise.
The 1383 that relate to the fired long time reporter were just stories to fill pages of the newspaper. The lack of reporting about the land based wind turbines issues is no excuse to allow 1383 filler news articles

Reader's trust means one reader. You mean readers' trust. But since you were unable to spell Peter Meyer's name or identity him by his correct title, it's no surprise you don't know basic grammar, possessives and mechanics.

Jane ,your trying to obfuscate a problem with extraneous information.
The reporter left because news stories contained quotes from nonexistent sources.
The newspaper failed to fact-check the news stories for years. Now today our media outlets sensationalize and even propagate bad information.
A news story about commercial wind turbine failures is unfolding at Otis Air Force Base in a three year old wind turbine. There is no accurate information on the ongoing failure.
It appears many newspapers suffer budget cuts and fail to devote the time required to real life news stories. You have to ask how long have readers been exposed to "puff " news stories while the real news is being ignored ?

For me, this is 'much ado about nothing'! Who cares, who could possibly care that she has embellished her stories. She was/is not writing hard news. Her stories were based on things that really happen, if not precisely when she placed them. Kind stories, touching stories. Stories, people, stories! Yes, Mike Barnicle is said to have done much the same thing. I have the same reaction to the punishment of Mike. If we are to believe all articles in the newspaper are the pure, unvarnished, gospel truth - well I have a bridge to offer you. These sorts of stories are uplifting and kind. Leave it. I like those stories.

The point of the newspapers is to print the truth. The newspaper is keeping the readers eye off the ball. I hear all these rumors of a multi-million dollar commercial wind turbine built with stimulus money (our money) on Otis Air Base needs up to one million dollars in repairs .
The Otis Air Base people say there is nothing wrong with the turbine installed in 2009 ! They also say it needs a new gear box in the next breath and they haven't figured out the replacement cost yet !
The newspapers have a duty to look into what is going on at the base .We read all these great news stories about commercial wind turbines then when something goes wrong the papers won't report it !
People need to hear the real truth about the total cost of these turbines!
I like those stories
