Fifteen works by Cape Cod artists will be mounted this week inside the new Barnstable Municipal Airport terminal. They represent the first exhibit of local art designed to create an added "Cape Cod sense of place" to the facility.
The works were chosen by a seven-person arts jury from among 115 submissions. They are expected to be on display for about six months after which a new round of art will be chosen for exhibit.
"The works represent an extraordinary range of local talent," said Kevin Howard, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod who helped organize the project along with airport commission vice chairman Donald Megathlin.
"The airport will serve as an artistic showcase in front of tens of thousands of airline passengers and visitors, just in time for the start of the season," Megathlin added.
Each work will be insured against loss or damage by the Town of Barnstable. In addition, contact information will be shown beside each work so interested buyers may follow up directly with the artist.
The artists whose work was chosen for exhibit include Robert Cardinal and Charles Fields of North Truro, Doug Johnson and Joyce Zavorkis of Orleans, Shawn Dahlstrom of East Dennis, Nancy Devine of Hyannis, Stephanie Foster of West Harwich, Shannon Goheen of Dennisport and Megan Hinton of Wellfleet.
Also, Bao Lede of West Barnstable, William Mahoney of Harwich, Cleber Stecei of Mashpee, Tom Stringe of Brewster, Karol Wyckoff of South Yarmouth and Lyn Dube of Sandwich.
The jury included Howard, Megathlin and airport manager Roland "Bud Breault; Michael Giaquinto, exhibitions curator at the Cape Cod Museum of Art; local artist Suzanne Packer-McGarr; author and art critic Debbie Forman; and, Chatham architect John R. DaSilva.
