10 Questions with Four Seas Ice Cream's Douglas Warren
Founded in 1934 by W. Wells Watson, the legendary ice cream shoppe is owned and loved by Douglas and Peggy Warren.
Q: What did you dream of being as a kid?
I always wanted to be a designer; planes, cars, buildings, landscape - anything creative.
Q: How does your personality play into your business?
The addition of ice cream cakes last fall gave me an opportunity to be very creative. My wife and I would work off each other to get great design.
Q: At what moment did you decide to open a business?
After my brother died, I knew that when it came time I would jump at the chance to buy and take over the family business. My parents actually met at Four Seas Ice Cream back in the mid 50’s. So in 1999 my dad called and asked if I still want to buy it: yes! I gave my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) and her daughter a tour of the Cape and New England. She said yes to marry me, to move from Vegas to the Cape, and to buy/run Four Seas with me.
Q: What inspired you?
My parents, my wife and family, the staff of Four Seas, the customers, and being a part of the Centerville and Cape communities makes this an awesome experience everyday. We’re creating smiles and memories. Love it.
Q: Describe the biggest challenge of owning a business?
Dealing with the town when they change the zoning laws needlessly and restrict small businesses' growth.
Q: Describe the best thing about owning a business?
The people! We love our employees and customers; they’re wonderful.
Q: What is one thing you would never change about your business?
Making the Cape’s Best Ice Cream.
Q: What is your business’ greatest asset?
Being surrounded with great people.
Q: What is your favorite spot in town?
The Centerville Beaches.
Q: What’s one thing the community should know about you?
I love the Cape community. Being on the board on both the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce and the Centerville Civic Association allows me to be a greater part of the community. I love the Centerville Civic Association’s Christmas Stroll; we (Four Seas) have created a Christmas Train and Village display (over 50 buildings) in the store. The proceeds from the stroll aids the Family in Needs program.
It is wonderful watching everyone come in and view the display; from 1 to 101 they all have huge smiles. There’s nothing better in life than smiles.

I have been going to 4 Seas since I was 3 years old....a total of 48 years. My kids love coming to the Cape for 4 Seas Ice Cream and Cup Cake Charlies. If I wasnt trapped in Worcester I would be in every day. Keep up the good work. Scott -Barnstable HS 1978
