Legislators Celebrate Donate Life Day on Cape Cod

State Representatives Cleon Turner and Demetrius Atsalis joined the New England Organ Bank and individuals personally touched by donation to celebrate Donate Life Cape Day on Cape Cod.  The Yarmouth Registry of Motor Vehicles served as the setting for the event, because the question of becoming an organ and tissue donor is presented to individuals renewing their driver’s license or identification cards, not only in Massachusetts, but in every state in the nation. “The RMV plays a critically important role in the donation process”, said Matt Boger State Relations for New England Organ Bank, “as 99.7% of all Massachusetts residents who designate themselves as an organ and tissue donor do so at the RMV.”

Representative Turner showed the heart on his driver’s license indentifying that he is an organ donor.  “I applaud RMV Registrar Rachel Kaprielian and her entire staff for presenting this important question to the public.  That simple question can truly save a life.”

Tom Bernardo, District Director for Representative Atsalis applauded the efforts of the RMV and New England Organ Bank, “Organ donation is truly one of the kindest things one can do for another person.  The RMV does a great job of asking the question and the New England Organ Bank does a great job in helping save lives.  It is a great partnership.”

Fifteen year old Grace Kobold of Brewster, an upcoming sophomore at Nauset Regional High School received a heart transplant two years ago.  “I am grateful every day for my donor and want to encourage everyone to say yes to organ and tissue donation.  In a few months I will be getting my learner’s permit, and am excited to check the yes box for organ donation.”  Kobold is an active teenager participating in cheerleading and golf, and has spent the summer working at a local ice cream store.

Sandwich’s Joan Crowley lost her son Jason several years ago.  His decision to be an organ donor, when he renewed his licensed, saved the lives of four people.  “I miss Jason every day, but am proud that he was able to save others.  I truly believe in the importance of organ donation and thank the RMV for their work each and every day asking the donation question.”  Crowley serves as an Ambassador for the Yarmouth RMV branch, providing staff with information on organ donation.

“I encourage all Cape Coders to embrace Donate Life Day and register to be an organ donor when renewing their license,” stated Boger, “but you don’t have to go to the RMV to register.  Anyone, over the age of 18 can register on-line 24-hours a day, seven days a week at www.DonateLifeNewEngland.org.  That simple yes can save up to eight lives.”
