Joel Crowell named a Community Bank Hero by Banker & Tradesman

Joel Crowell, President and CEO of The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, has been named a 2012 Community Bank Hero by Banker and Tradesman.  Crowell was one of sixteen Massachusetts banking executives honored for their dedication and leadership in the local community by the prestigious industry publication.  He and the other winners were honored at a reception at the Hyatt Regency Boston on May 23rd.

According to the Banker & Tradesman website, the award recipients  “not only excel in their careers, but also in the local community in which they serve.  The outstanding nominations poured in, and the winners have been selected.”

“I’m extremely honored to have been selected for this award with such an esteemed group of my industry peers,” said Joel Crowell.  “It’s a testament to our employees who truly embody the spirit of community activism every day. I’m so proud to be a part of a local community bank with over 90 years of service to our friends and neighbors on Cape Cod.”

Crowell’s nomination follows:

Joel Crowell has been a part of The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod since 1969.  This life-long Cape Codder and Dennis-Yarmouth High School graduate went to work at the Dennis branch as a teller the year after graduating high school and never left.  Joel attended Northeastern University, studying business and accounting, and continued working at the bank as a Co-op student. He has served many roles – from Assistant Branch Manager to Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer.  Joel was appointed President and CEO in 1983, the post he holds today.

Joel’s personal and professional contributions to the Cape Cod community are substantial and numerous.  As one of the Cape’s most respected business leaders, he is a Board Member of Cape Cod Healthcare, a Director of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, a Director of the Cape Cod Needy Fund, and a Trustee and President of The Kelley Foundation.  Over the years, he has provided guidance and support to many local institutions as a board member, trustee, chairman, director or volunteer. He also served as a Dennis Selectmen from 1978- 1985 and was Chairman for three of those years.

His impact on Cape Cod’s philanthropic community is equally prolific.  The bank donated over $100,000 to local non-profits in 2011. Joel is deeply committed to making donations to the community that are both lasting and impactful.  He personally responds to many of the requests the bank receives.  In 2012 the bank supported dozens of non-profits across the Cape, including The Boys & Girls Club, A Baby Center, The Arts Foundation, Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Young Professionals.  Last fall, upon hearing that a group of local veterans desperately needed a new van to transport them to off-Cape medical appointments, the bank immediately stepped forward and covered the cost.

Joel extends the same warmth and concern to his customers.  In recent years the number of foreclosures has escalated on Cape Cod.  Joel takes a personal interest in working with customers who are struggling, often meeting with them in their own homes.  Since the recession began in 2008, the bank has foreclosed on less than 15 properties.  Conversely, it has modified over 250 loans during that period, allowing families to stay in their homes.  With six branches and 135 employees, Joel stewards an organization that serves tens of thousands of Cape Codders.  His leadership and dedication are an inspiration to his team.  “Joel is a quiet, thoughtful leader who takes his responsibilities as CEO and his position in the community very seriously.  I frequently tell people that Joel is ‘as-advertised’.  He is who he is…there’s nothing phony about him,” said John Fulone, Chief Marketing Officer.

Joel is active in many industry organizations and is often called upon to address banking issues with elected officials at the state and local level.

Joel Crowell has helped shepherd this 90 year-old community bank for over four decades, expertly weaving The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod into the fabric of the Cape Cod community.
